About us<\/h1>\n

We both moved a lot as children<\/span>. <\/span>He got plucked from Texas and transplanted to Tennessee when he was a rising senior in <\/span>high school, and<\/span>\u00a0graduated from William Blount the first year it existed<\/span>. <\/span>She moved quite a bit more, landing in East Tennessee as a rising sophomore in high school<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>We are both the oldest of three, and each of us <\/span>have<\/span> both a brother and sister, all of whom <\/span>are\u00a0 close<\/span> to the same age<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>Val was born in Chapel Hill NC, and six weeks later, Ken was born in Nevada, Iowa. The stars aligned on visitation night at her ETSU dorm, when we met by way of a \u201cblind date\u201d arranged by a mutual friend, who \u201cjust knew\u201d we were supposed to be together<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>We parted ways midway through college, and eventually he joined the Air Force and she graduated from college.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Some time<\/span> later, we both attended the same New <\/span>Years<\/span> Eve party, and renewed our relationship<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>We became engaged and later married in a beautiful little white Episcopal church.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We made the decision together at year ten of Ken\u2019s satellite communications military career in the USAF, to voluntarily separate when the enlistment was complete and separate from the Air Force. Without a job even on the horizon, and WAY before internet and cell phones had arrived on scene, we relocated our little family from Nebraska to Tennessee by way of a U-Haul and a cram packed full little Saturn.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Small Roaster with the TIME to Find the Best Beans for Our Customers.<\/span><\/h2>\n

How KC Roasters came to be \u2013 Ken saw a TV show called D<\/span>angerous Grounds<\/span> around the same time we did our first cupping over at another coffee shop.<\/span> At that point we both became obsessed with all things<\/span>\u00a0coffee.\u00a0 Soon after, following in the footsteps of the legendary Maryville coffee guru, Ken <\/span>purchased<\/span> his first \u201cWhirley Pop\u201d and\u00a0began roasting over a propane torch.\u00a0 Eventually he moved through several home roasters, including the <\/span>Behmor<\/span>, which is when a friend begged him to start selling it.\u00a0 He did, he quickly outgrew his machine, and eventually landed at a <\/span>custom built<\/span> drum that he installed on a grill <\/span>rotisserie,<\/span> which is how he roasted for years in the beginning<\/span>.\u00a0 He roasted this way in the rain, cold, and <\/span>heat<\/span>,<\/span> blowing off the chaff with a leaf blower until just prior to our first Farmers Market in 2022, when he took the leap to roasting on an Artisan roaster. It was love at first <\/span>site<\/span> as he became acquainted with what later became named \u201c<\/span>Mr<\/span> Fields\u201d (for those old enough to know about WC Fields, you will get it), because the roaster looks like him!\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kens interests: Serial killers. Well, <\/span>books and movies that is, <\/span>and <\/span>he has the most <\/span>ecle<\/span>ctic, interesting, and <\/span>varied taste in music <\/span>out of <\/span>just about anyone<\/span>, other than <\/span>our<\/span> son<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>The same can be said <\/span>about his taste in what he reads<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>He has been a <\/span>life long<\/span> concert goer<\/span> to concerts of all kinds in all venues<\/span>. Long drives in the mountains <\/span>and riding his <\/span>Ebike<\/span> are two of his favorite things to do<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>He also <\/span>serves<\/span> on the vestry at his church, St Andrews Episcopal<\/span> Church.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vals<\/span> interests<\/span>:\u00a0 <\/span>Spending<\/span> time with loved ones<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>She loves to cook<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>She loves the ocean<\/span>. C<\/span>ould be a TV junkie but not. She loves b<\/span>ike riding, <\/span>music, <\/span>podcasts, gardening, <\/span>bird watching<\/span>, <\/span>thinking about <\/span>landscaping, listening to <\/span>audio books, taking Harper, our HABIT<\/a><\/strong> dog <\/span>into <\/span>her gig (the elementary school “ruff reading program” classroom). S<\/span>pending time around trees and in mountains<\/span>, and perfecting her coffee chocolate recipe for Beyond the Bean<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>She <\/span>spends<\/span> a lot of time <\/span>testing out chocolate <\/span>with area e<\/span>ntrepreneurs<\/span> at Sky City, <\/span>a place where one can go to collaborate, work in peace, work \u201cin community\u201d<\/span> vs being in a dark room at home<\/span>.\u00a0 She’s <\/span>also working on getting us mor<\/span>e <\/span>involved<\/span> Chamber of Commerce\/Blount Partnership<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>She is known to carry chocolate at <\/span>almost all<\/span> times<\/span>, and give a lot of it out, in her quest for <\/span>THE FINAL RECIPE<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We have a coffee snob of a son, who is a Pride of the Southland Band four-year <\/span>veteran, and<\/span> followed that up with five years in the Tennessee Air Guard. He has now cross trained <\/span>into<\/span> his career field (cyber security) as a newly commissioned <\/span>Officer.<\/span>\u00a0 Unless there is a \u201cneed for us to know<\/span>\u201d,<\/span> we <\/span>likely never<\/span> will know exactly what he does.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
